What opportunities do you feel women in accounting have now that they didn’t have when you started in the profession?
I don’t think opportunities are gender specific. I’ve always made my own opportunities when I didn’t see an obvious one in front of me.
How important is work/life balance and what suggestions do you have for those who are struggling to attain this?
I don’t believe work/life balance exists, and it pains me to see people struggling to find it. In my mind, it’s more of a healthy integration; everyone has to find what works for their situation. If you need a break from work, take one. And remember: No one’s life depends on having a bank reconciliation completed. There are no bookkeeping emergencies.
How do you see yourself participating in shaping the future of the accounting profession?
The last few years, I’ve run StacyKAcademy.com and I hope to continue that. The course offers tools to help run a small bookkeeping/accounting practice, teaches attendees some important processes to learn how to get and keep the clients that are a best fit for them, but I think the most important things are that it helps them realize their value and offers an amazing network for them to lean on and be the person for others to lean on, when they need help in their business.
Looking back at your career, what would you do differently given the knowledge you have today and how can women who are entering the benefit from that knowledge?
I can’t say that I would have done anything differently; I follow my instincts, never worry about what anyone else was doing and focus on what work is interesting to me.
